On May 19-22, the SPMHCI hosted the International Museum Day sponsored by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts

June 28 of this year marked the official opening of the museum

On January 5, a Memorandum of Agreement was executed and signed between the provincial Government and SPMH Center, Inc. for the museum to be established at the present site, the old provincial hospital built during the American Period between 1916-1920

by virtue of Republic Act No. 8806 of August 16, and ratified on December 16, Sorsogon City was created from the merging of the towns of Bacon and Sorsogon.

February of this year, the newly formed Sorsogon Provincial Tourism Council discovered whale shark or locally known as butanding, considering it as a tourist destination in the municipality of Donsol.

In Tigkiw na Saday jar burial site, a 45-minute hike from Barangay Escuala, Casiguran, saw eight (8) burial jars excavated from April 22 to May 21 and October 18. the team from the national Museum came ipon large, circular, dome-shaped flat bottomoed stone covers made of volcanic tuff with an approximate weight of 50 to 60 kilograms.

It was also during this same year, that the Kasanggayahan Amphitheater was constructed where the trade fair, exhibits, cultural performances were heldd during the Kasanggayahan Festival.

A pre-historic site, the Bato Limestones Caves in Bacon, Sorsogon excavated by Robert Fox and Alfredo Evangelista of the National Museum, revealed burials containing human bones, seashells, stone tools and stone beads with pottery dating about 2,000 years old.

The Sorsogon Press Club was organized on September 15.

Salvador Escudero Sr. was designated by the US Army headquarters “to be instrumental in re-establishing the different civil agencies, not only in the Province of Sorsogon, but alsi in the other provinces nearby”.

By around February, Funes presented himself before Belarmino in Malobago, Albay and received a commision as the overall military commander of revolutionary forces in Sorsogon.

In August, Gen. Elwell Otis, military governor of the Philippines ordered a bloackade of the Bicol region’s ports to prevent them from exporting their abaca and financing the cause of Aguinaldo’s army.

on the 21st of September, Spaniards left the province without resistance and hoarded the ships waiting at the Sorsogon Bay immediately set sail for Manila.

While Parish priest and concurrently Vicar Forane of the Province of Sorsogon, Fr. Barlin was elected Provinicial Governor by the Spanish Government.

Sta. Magdalena became an independent pueblo civil under the province of Albay, then, after a few days, the town came under the newly organized privince of Sorsogon with Isidro Gallanosa as its first gobernadorcillo.

Fr. Jorge Barlin was assigned as parish priest and Vicar Forane of Sorsogon, which was then under the Diocese of Nueva Caceres. He held this position in Sorsoogon for almost 16 years or until November 14, 1903 when he was appointed Bishop of the Diocese if Nueva Caceres. he was consecrated as Bishop on June 29, 1906, making him the first Filipino Bishop.

Irosin, known as San Miguel, became an indepent pueblo civil.

Barcelona’s legal existence as a pueblo civil was decreed by the virtue of an order dated April 16.

The town of Sorsogon became a political unit under the province of Albay.

Magallanes became an independent parish.

Spanish colonial government approved the establishment of Magallanes as a new town on April 30.

Sorsogon suffered severely from an earthquake which lasted almost continuously for 35 days, raging its greatest fury on the 21st of March.

Juban used to be a barrio of Casiguran until 1817 when it was organized as a separate parish.

Donsol became a pueblo civil, or town.

Juban and Matnog became an independent pueblo civil under the province of Albay.

On the the 13th of March, the expedition headed by Alejandro Malaspina arrived at the Sorsogon harbor aboard the Atrevida. Providing the Spanish Crown with scientific illustration and reder stereoscopic images of the colonial landscape, Malaspina wrote “El Puerto de Sorsogones, sin dudaalguna. El mas hermosque hoya formado lanaturaleza.” translating to “The harbor of Sorsogon, is without doubt, the mist beautiful which nature has shaped.”

On the 13th of June, Gubat which was then a barrio of Bulusan, was declared by the Spanish government a new pueblo civil or town under the prvince of Albay and became an independent parish on the same day.

in June this year, 900 Maranaos invaded the town of Bacon.

The last galleon built in the Philippines, the Santissimia Trinidad, was constructed in the Bagatao shipyard and made her maiden voyage to Acapulco on the same year it was finished.

Spanish authorities opened a cordoneria (cordage factory) in Sorsogon.

Fr. Pedro Espallargas invented the abacca stripping knife, which we called hag-otan, in Sitio Cogon Bacon.

The 2,500 ton Nuestra Señora del Buen Socorro, considered as the biggest and grandest galleron ever built in the Philippines at that time was completed and set sail from Calaguimi shipyard in Bagatao Island on August 28.

Bulusan a mere visita of Casiguran until it separated and became an independent parish in this year.

A huge number of lowland residents who suffered much abuses from the Spaniards deserted the pueblos and exodused to the hills. They came to be known as cimarrones, remontados, vagamundos and criminals.

The Real Astillero de Bagatao or Royal Astillero of Bagatao was established by Governor General Juan de Silva in Calaguimi, Magallanes. A shipyard that where warships and other small sea vessels were built and later on sailed to Mexico and sold for huge profit. Some of the known galleons built here are the San Felipe and the Santiago used in the battles at Playa Honda in Zambales against the Dutch around 1616-167.
